The cost of a recall and plant closure due to Salmonella contamination is to be more than initially predicated, according to Strauss Group.

Research funded by the Center for Produce Safety (CPS) is hoping to identify production practices that may contribute to Salmonella contamination of bulb onions and steps growers can take to reduce food safety risks.

Salmonella on onions is a growing concern. This past year a Salmonella Oranienburg outbreak linked to whole, fresh onions imported from Mexico sickened more than 1,000 consumers. Dutch authorities have stressed the need to keep a focus on Salmonella despite restrictions because of avian flu outbreaks.

Producers warned of potential strike impact on Salmonella samples

Egg and poultry meat producers in England have been told to prepare for disruption to sampling deliveries because of strike action.

Still no source found in Salmonella outbreak; other investigations ongoing at FDA

The number of patients confirmed in an outbreak of infections from Salmonella Braenderup has increased from 63 to 70 in the past week, according to the Food and Drug Administration.

The agency first posted the outbreak on June 22. As of July 21 the FDA has begun traceback efforts, but has not released what food or foods are being traced. Also, the FDA has not released any specific information about the patients such as their ages or where they live.… Read the rest

More patients identified in outbreak of Salmonella infections; other outbreaks still under investigation by the FDA

The FDA is continuing to investigate several outbreaks, including a Salmonella Braenderup outbreak which has seen a jump of 17 patients in the past week.

Officials have not yet been able to find the food source that is causing the infections, according to an update from the Food and Drug Administration. A week ago the patient count stood at 42. As of July 6 there are 59 people who have been confirmed with infections.

Salmonella contamination not unusual in chicken

One-third of samples tested by Consumer Reports showed Salmonella contamination of ground chicken, including product from one of the nation’s largest producers.

The investigation by the non-profit consumer watchdog group included testing of 75 samples of ground chicken from Perdue and other companies.
