A committee in the U.S. Senate has finally set a nomination hearing to consider Jose Emilio Esteban for the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s top food safety job.
Nominated on Nov. 12, 2021, by President Joe Biden, Esteban is scheduled to go before the Senate Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition, and Forestry on Sept. 22. Ferrero has received the all-clear at a factory behind a Salmonella outbreak after no problems were found during the initial approval period.
The company revealed it had been given final authorization for production at the plant in Arlon from the Federal Agency for the Safety of the Food Chain (FASFC) in Belgium.

The court’s newest justice, Ketanji Brown Jackson, omitted information regarding reimbursements and teaching income when she filed her 2014 and 2016 financial disclosures as a federal district court judge. On a newly released disclosure form, Jackson wrote that she “inadvertently omitted” the information from the previous years’ forms.

Several groups, including Consumer Reports and STOP Foodborne Illness, have written to USDA Secretary Tom Vilsack in support of increased food safety efforts regarding Salmonella in poultry.
The groups describe current regulations as “antiquated” and encourage the secretary to move forward to develop new and enforceable standards that are product based. They say such changes are “a commonsense approach” and will help protect consumers from dangerous Salmonella-contaminated poultry.
